4 Simple Steps to Update Your Wardrobe on a Budget
Updating your wardrobe can be both time consuming and expensive, but with a few simple steps, you can easily transform your wardrobe no matter what season you’re in. Creating a classic wardrobe featuring interchangeable pieces that can be mixed with each other is also known as a capsule wardrobe. Capsule wardrobes feature essential items of clothing that will never go out of style. Here are the steps you can take to easily update your wardrobe on a minimal budget:
Step One: Declutter
Clear out every single item of clothing in your closet! This might sound daunting, but when updating your wardrobe, it’s essential to see every single piece of clothing you own and weed out the items you no longer wear or that are no longer in style. Lay them in a pile and sort them one by one into three piles: a pile to keep, a pile to donate and a pile to resell.
The pile of clothing that you want to donate can be placed inside of a bag that you can take to Goodwill or your local shelter for those in need. The pile of clothing that you want to resell can be neatly folded into a tote and the pile to keep will now be sorted.
Step Two: Sorting
When it comes to sorting, you want to look for the essential key wardrobe staples. These key pieces should include: a basic white tee, black tank, dress shirt, cardigan, sweater, denim jacket, skinny jeans, and dress pants/skirt. If you don’t own any of these items, add them to your shopping list. These are all key essentials that are easy to mix for several outfits with minimal effort.
Step Three: Establish a Budget
Consider how much you have to spend on clothing. Take your pile of clothes to resell to a consignment shop or post in online garage sale sites that are local to you and use this money to replenish your closet. When you are ready to start shopping, try going to thrift stores and sift through to find your wardrobe staple pieces you don’t already own. You can also check out the clearance sections at your favorite stores to save and to really stretch your budget.
Step Four: Shop & Organize
When shopping for clothing, be sure to find versatile pieces that can be paired with virtually anything in your closet. This will allow you to get the most wear for your money. Also, purchase clothing that fits well. Try it on, take a brief walk up and down the aisle to ensure the item you plan on purchasing fits well and is comfortable. There’s nothing worse than buying a clothing item and leaving it sit in your closet untouched!
Once you’ve purchased your essentials, now it’s time to organize your new capsule wardrobe. To visualize your updated wardrobe, hang all of your basics together, hang all of your work/dress clothes together, pair your denim together and then your outerwear. Now, you can see just how easy getting ready for the day can be when all of your clothing can be paired together for the perfect on trend outfit.
